VAPING – DANGERS IN E-CIGARETTES
Many parents remain in the dark about the devices, which adults sometimes mistake for flash drives or highlighters.
“With nearly every presentation we give on this subject, parents’ jaws are really just on the floor by the end,” Jill Doberstein, supervisor of Essentia Health’s tobacco cessation program said.
More needs to be done to educate both young people and adults about the risks of vaping nicotine-laced products, said Pat McKone, regional senior director of the American Lung Association.
According to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, e-cigarette use increased an alarming 78% between 2017 -2018. That represents 3.6 million teens. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug that can adversely affect teens’ brain development and have long lasting effects on attention, learning and memory. In fact, some e-cigarettes can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Despite these facts, many teens still do not perceive e-cigarettes as being harmful.
